Brighton journalist confirms Carlos Baleba news

Carlos Baleba appears to be edging ever closer to becoming Manchester United’s third midfield signing of the summer after more than a year of interest from Old Trafford.

United explored a move for the Cameroon international last summer but ultimately decided Brighton’s valuation was too high.

The situation has changed significantly 12 months later, with Michael Carrick already welcoming Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as part of a major midfield rebuild.

Baleba would offer something different to both players.

The 22-year-old is a left-footed defensive midfielder renowned for his athleticism, aggression and ability to cover large areas of the pitch.

He began his career in Cameroon before moving to Lille in 2022 and then joining Brighton for around €27 million plus bonuses the following year.

Baleba has since developed into one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated young midfielders, combining strong ball-winning qualities with the ability to carry possession through midfield.

David Ornstein reported on Wednesday that Manchester United are closing in on a deal, with an offer worth around £60million plus £5million in add-ons already submitted.

There has now been another significant indication that a move is likely to eventually be completed.

Brighton journalist provides Carlos Baleba confirmation

Andy Naylor, The Athletic’s long-serving Brighton and Hove Albion correspondent, has now suggested that Baleba’s move to Manchester United will “probably” happen.

Writing on his X account, Naylor discussed Brighton’s expected outgoing business involving Baleba and Yankuba Minteh.

He wrote: “On transfers, Minteh (to Liverpool) and Baleba (to Man Utd) will probably both end up happening, as the offers (50m and around 60m) are not that far away from making sense.”

That is another encouraging update for United after negotiations progressed significantly this week.

Brighton have not yet accepted United’s proposal, but the gap between the two clubs appears increasingly manageable.

Baleba is currently recovering from an ankle ligament injury, meaning an immediate debut would be unlikely even if an agreement is finalised quickly.

However, with the midfielder reportedly getting closer to Old Trafford, United now appear increasingly well-positioned to finally conclude a pursuit which began more than a year ago.
