Brighton host Premier League champions Liverpool in the Premier League, with the Seagulls looking to get back-to-back wins. They beat an in-form Wolves team 2-0, which has put them ninth in the league with two games left. With eighth and possibly ninth getting European football next season, this is a massive game for Fabian Hurzeler’s team. They are level on points with eighth-place Brentford and two points clear of Bournemouth. Here is our Brighton predicted lineup as they take on Arne Slot’s side at the Amex.
Bart Verbruggen kept his first league clean sheet since February last weekend. Mats Wieffer has impressed since coming in at right-back, and started there last time out. Adam Webster partnered with Jan Paul van Hecke, with Pervis Estupinan keeping his place at left back.
Carlos Baleba and Yasin Ayari partnered each other in midfield for the first time since the FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest. Matt O’Riley was again chosen to start in the more advanced midfield role. The Danish midfielder is starting to get some momentum now after an injury-stricken start to his time in Sussex.
Despite being a right-back, Tariq Lamptey started on the right-wing. He made his first start since the FA Cup victory away to Newcastle United, where he was sent off. Yankuba Minteh was shifted over to the left wing, while Danny Welbeck started up front.
After a poor April, Brighton collected four out of six points in May. Three of these came in the win against Wolves. Welbeck scored his 10th goal of the season from the spot in the first half. Brajan Gruda scored late to seal the victory. It was the German’s first goal for Brighton in what has been a tough season for the 20-year-old.
Hurzeler will be relieved that his team kept a clean sheet. They restricted Wolves to only two shots in the second half while also pushing on for more goals. Brighton have scored in every game since the 3-0 loss to Aston Villa at the start of April, and have scored at least two goals in all but two games since that defeat.
The Seagulls will need to be solid defensively and offensively to beat Liverpool. If they are clinical in front of goal, then they have a great chance of grabbing a result.
Hurzeler confirmed that captain Lewis Dunk will be in contention for the game against Liverpool. He missed the victory against Wolves through injury, but his manager is confident he can make a return.
Dutch defender Joel Veltman is back in the squad after being held up again by injuries. Kaoru Mitoma will also be in contention to start after starting on the bench last week. João Pedro will be available after he served his three-game suspension.
The game will come a week too soon for Georginio Rutter, with Solly March, James Milner, and Ferdi Kadioglu also ruled out.
