Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot suffered heart-break in recent days, as their 2026 World Cup campaign came to an end.
The Portuguese side were defeated 1-0 by neighbours Spain, as the Spanish side progressed to face Belgium in the Quarter-Finals.
Following the defeat, Portugal announced the exit of Roberto Martinez from his role as head coach, with the side now having announced his replacement.
Taking to their official website, the Portugal national team confirmed: “Jorge Jesus is the new national team coach and will be at the helm of the Portuguese team until 2030.”
The statement continued: “The coach was presented this Friday by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) at the City of Football and answered journalists’ questions.”
Welcoming the new head coach, Pedro Proenca, the President of the FPF, commented: “Today, we begin a new era at the FPF.”
He continued: “The presentation of Jorge Jesus marks the beginning of a well-defined culture of victory, a culture affirmed with conviction and assumed as our new standard of excellence.
“We have chosen a new national team coach whose profile perfectly reflects what we want for this new phase: leadership, ambition, and results.
“Jorge Jesus assumes today the mission of preparing a National Team capable of competing in the next Nations League, the 2028 European Championship, and the 2030 World Cup, which we will also be proud to host at home.
“A demanding, universally acclaimed coach, one of the best coaches in our history, accustomed to always playing to win, with a strong identity, and who shares our vision.”
