Bruno Fernandes has been one of Manchester United’s best signings of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, being trusted to lead the team with the captain’s armband.

Last season the Portugal international was United’s top goalscorer and grabbed the most assists with 19 each, carrying the club to avoid relegation.

This season, Fernandes has been shifted further back into a central-midfield position, but is still the core of the side.

Already the captain has five goals and seven assists in 17 games, having hit 103 goals, 93 assists and 307 appearances for United since his move in 2019.

However, his time at Old Trafford could be coming to an end as the 31-year-old has made some interesting comments in recent interviews.

Bruno Fernandes recently commented that he’d still like to play in Spain and Italy, however wants to stay at Old Trafford as long as United want him.

Now, in an interview with Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel, Fernandes has explained why he wants to stay with Manchester United, having rejected two offers to leave the club.

The Portugal international commented: “When I came to the club, apart from loving being here and loving the club, I think my loyalty was like in the toughest periods I had the club and I could have left in two times”

He continued: “The club said, ‘no, we need you.’ And I said, okay, you gave me something. I will give you something.

“Obviously, I think the time at the club has not been as I wanted because obviously, I wanted to lift trophies and I haven’t lift as many as I should and I could.

“But at the same time, I think everything I’ve done for the club in a certain way was still very important and not taking nothing away from other players that were here and everything.

“I think when we struggled the most, I stayed present to the club and I think everyone at the club, I hope is aware of that because the chances I had were very good.

“So I’m very aware that I could have done a different path. I could have gone in a different way and probably winning more trophies and people talking about me in a different way because I’ve had trophies into my cabinet.

“So nowadays people talk more like you are a better player or a worse player if you win or you lose trophies.”

Fernandes’ biggest transfer offer came last summer as Al-Hilal offered United a £100 million fee for their captain and offered the midfielder a £200 million contract.

However, Fernandes, as explained to Rio Ferdinand, rejected the move in favour of staying at Old Trafford, wanting to help Ruben Amorim rebuild the club.
