Bruno Fernandes joins Cristiano Ronaldo in exclusive club

Bruno Fernandes has excelled this season for Manchester United, reinforcing his position as one of the club’s shining modern lights.

The Portuguese international, who has led by example as captain, is on the verge of history with him having the opportunity to set a new Premier League assists record against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Even without this, however, Fernandes’ performances this season have already been recognized with him winning the Player of the Year award from Manchester United whilst also being awarded the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award.

On Saturday, as well, he was awarded Player of the Season by the Premier League, beating Declan Rice to the award even though the Arsenal midfielder won the league.

With him winning this award, Bruno Fernandes has joined Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo in an exclusive club.

Fernandes is now one of just six United players to win the Premier League’s Player of the Season award.

Previously, Ronaldo (2006-07, 2007-08), Nemanja Vidić (2008-09 and 2010-11), Wayne Rooney (2009-10), Dwight Yorke (1998-99), Peter Schmeichel (1995-96), and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002-03) have all won the award representing the Red Devils.

Fernandes is the first United player in 15 years to win the Premier League’s top individual prize, even given that the team will finish third in the English top flight this season.

The Portuguese international has established his place amongst Manchester United folklore already, where he joins names such as Ronaldo, Rooney, and Schmeichel as well as others.

It remains to be seen how successful the midfielder will be for the club in the coming years but he has other trophies still to win.

The Premier League is one of these and it is likely that he will lead the side as captain in their pursuit of the title next season.
