Bruno Fernandes’ path to Manchester United legend status has been exceptional

There haven’t been many things that Manchester United could rely on over the last five years, but one constant has been the quality of Bruno Fernandes.

In the time since his arrival in 2020, Fernandes has become a central figure at Old Trafford, with his skill and leadership slotting right into the club’s identity.

The £55m United spent to bring him in now looks like a bargain. Over five and a half seasons, he’s put up 98 goals and 86 assists across 291 appearances.

Fernandes is just two goals away from reaching the 100-goal mark for United, a milestone that would further underline his impact at the club.

Diogo Dalot called it back in 2020 when he said Fernandes would become a legend. Five years later, with four Player of the Year awards to his name, it’s hard to argue against that claim.

He’s taken on a new role this season but continues to play at an elite level. His consistency remains one of the few things United fans can count on each week.

Bruno Fernandes remains the Premier League’s most creative player

With Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha joining Manchester United this summer, Bruno Fernandes has found himself moving into a deeper midfield role. It’s a shift away from his usual spot as the team’s primary number 10.

It’s also a position where he’s led the league in chances created four times over the past five seasons. That includes 2024/25 when he finished top of the list with 91 chances made.

There have been questions about where Fernandes fits best under Rúben Amorim, but he provided an answer right out of the gate in week one of this season.

In United’s opener against Arsenal, Fernandes created 12 shots and made five key passes, putting him at the top of both categories to start the new campaign.

This puts Fernandes well ahead of Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz – who cost £116m – with stats that highlight why he’s still one of the most influential midfielders in England despite no longer playing as a traditional number 10.

Bruno Fernandes could be set for a mammoth season with Manchester United

Fernandes created five chances against an Arsenal side that’s not just strong defensively but also one of the early title favourites.

If he maintains anything close to this rate, he’d be on track to create 190 chances over a full season – numbers that would shatter existing assist records.

It’s now up to his teammates to take advantage of the opportunities he provides, as the volume is unlikely to drop off.

Heading into the match against Fulham, it’s hard to see them holding United scoreless given how sharp they looked in the opener.
