Bryan Mbeumo confirmed as new captain

Bryan Mbeumo has rapidly become one of Manchester United’s most dependable figures, and now the forward has been handed a significant new responsibility.

Leadership has become a sensitive subject at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes’ quality is unquestionable.

He won the Premier League Player of the Season award after inspiring Michael Carrick’s revival last term.

However, the Portuguese international has faced renewed scrutiny during United’s dreadful start to 2026/27.

Former United defender Phil Bardsley recently described Fernandes as looking unusually “flat”.

Meanwhile, wider criticism has centred on a perceived lack of leadership and intensity throughout Carrick’s side.

The manager himself defended Fernandes last month, dismissing suggestions that leadership was responsible for United’s problems.

Mbeumo, meanwhile, has rarely stopped delivering since arriving from Brentford last summer.

He finished his debut campaign as United’s joint-top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions, producing memorable strikes against Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.

His journey to Old Trafford had been years in the making.

Mbeumo developed at Troyes before moving to Brentford in 2019, helping the Bees reach the Premier League and eventually becoming a 20-goal top-flight forward.

Now, at 27, his career has reached another landmark.

Bryan Mbeumo named new captain

Cameroon head coach David Pagou has  confirmed Mbeumo as the new captain of the Indomitable Lions, according to Cameroonian outlet Camfoot.

Pagou announced the decision ahead of Thursday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Comoros in Garoua.

Arthur Avom and Samuel Kotto have been appointed as Mbeumo’s deputies.

The United forward succeeds Nouhou Tolo, who wore the armband during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Tolo is absent from the latest squad alongside several other experienced internationals.

Mbeumo chose Cameroon over France at senior level in 2022 after previously representing France’s youth sides.

He subsequently featured at the 2022 World Cup and has become one of his country’s most recognisable players.

Against Comoros, he will now walk out carrying considerably more than United’s attacking expectations.
