Tottenham Hotspur had a mixed summer transfer window, with new boss Thomas Frank managing to bring in exciting players but also missing out on exciting talents.
Spurs suffered several heartbreaks in the summer, starting with Nottingham Forest blocking Morgan Gibbs-White’s move despite the Lilywhites triggering the playmaker’s release clause. The Gibbs-White saga was followed by Eberechi Eze, who was close to joining Thomas Frank’s side. However, Kai Havertz’s injury prompted Arsenal to enter the race and snatch Eze under Tottenham’s noses.
Tottenham also failed to land Como star Nico Paz, as Real Madrid blocked a move due to them holding an iron grip on the playmaker’s future. Eventually, the Europa League winners managed to end their chase for a creative midfielder with the acquisition of highly-rated talent Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.
However, Frank is not overly satisfied with the creative options at his disposal and wants to improve the area of the pitch during the winter transfer window. As per recent reports, Spurs are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt. Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also interested in the player.
The north London club are looking at Julian Brandt as someone who can fill the void created by James Maddison’s ACL injury. Borussia Dortmund may decide to cash in on the Germany international, given that his contract expires at the end of the season. However, the player has now made a surprising move amidst Tottenham’s interest.
According to a report from Bild, Dortmund boss Niko Kovac is a fan of Brandt, and the creative forward has ‘legitimate hopes of staying’ at the club beyond next summer. In fact, the player has himself initiated talks over a new deal with the Bundesliga club.
Brandt has started the new season well for Dortmund, netting a goal and two assists in four league appearances. The versatile attacker, who was once the preferred target for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, has proven himself in the Bundesliga and recent links with Tottenham suggested he wants to try a new adventure in England.
However, the recent development proposes it was a tactic from Brandt and his entourage to bring Dortmund into the negotiating table over a new contract. The Signal Iduna Park-based outfit would loathe to lose such a skilled and experienced attacker on a free transfer next summer, especially someone who still has many years remaining at the top level.
This latest update from Bild should come as a blow for Frank’s Spurs. It is not guaranteed whether Brandt would extend his stay at Dortmund but the way things are panning is there for everyone to see.
