When Manchester City confirms the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, Pep Guardiola will finally have a proper left-back to utilise. Based on the strengths of Ait-Nouri’s game, he should become a valuable player for Manchester City. Especially when City have possession. But there is a flow on effect that is produced by City signing the Algerian international. Provided that Rayan Ait-Nouri becomes Manchester City’s first-choice left-back, Josko Gvardiol should play as a permanent centre-back. The Croatian international could become the player that Pep Guardiola builds Manchester City’s defence around.

Josko Gvardiol is the player who can be the mainstay of Manchester City’s defence.

Josko Gvardiol did play alongside Ruben Dias in the heart of Manchester City’s defence towards the end of the 24/25 season. The pair struck up a strong partnership and looked to have the makings of Manchester City’s next key centre-back pairing. But looking specifically at Gvardiol, he has the makings of a player that Manchester City can build their defence around. With the imminent arrival of Rayan Ait-Nouri, that process could begin at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

Josko Gvardiol has played primarily at left-back over the past two seasons. His ability on the ball has been a key component of Manchester City’s build-up play. The Croatian international has been immense in the role for Pep Guardiola’s team. He has also scored crucial goals at times when he drifts forward.

But looking ahead, it’s time he shifts to centre-back on a permanent basis. Simply put, the strength of Gvardiol’s game belongs at centre-back. Being left footed, he helps with Manchester City’s build-up play playing as the left sided centre-back. His overall speed and timing of a challenge is suited to playing in Manchester City’s high defensive line. The time has come for Gvardiol to become Manchester City’s first choice centre-back. It’s as simple as that when looking ahead to next season.

Rayan Ait-Nouri’s imminent arrival at Manchester City is exciting, but the possibilities it opens up are just as intriguing.

Any new arrival at Manchester City is met with excitement. Especially one that is set to play in a position that Pep Guardiola’s squad has long needed a specialist in. Rayan Ait-Nouri will be a quality addition to the Manchester City setup. His overall game should be a boost to Manchester City’s play. But more importantly, his arrival should see Josko Gvardiol move across to centre-back on a more regular basis. That is just as exciting a prospect to consider as the imminent arrival of a player that Manchester City has needed for so long.
