Manuel Akanji underlined the importance of tonight’s match as Inter Milan look to build momentum against Cagliari.
Speaking to DAZN, via FCInter1908, before kick-off, the Swiss defender stressed that the Nerazzurri cannot afford to slip up.
“We need points and we must win today,” Akanji said.
“We come from two consecutive victories and we have to continue like this.”
The 28-year-old joined Inter in the summer and has quickly established himself as a regular starter under Cristian Chivu.
After solid displays in Serie A and the Champions League, he now faces the challenge of adapting fully to Italian football and life in Milan.
“I’m trying to learn Italian,” he explained. “Everyone is helping me, from the coach to the staff and teammates. I’m also trying to improve my performances within the team.”
Akanji has added physical presence and composure to Inter’s backline, which has been under scrutiny at the start of the season.
The Nerazzurri conceded in all but one of their league matches so far and Chivu has called for greater concentration in defence.
With Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni alongside him, Akanji is to form part of the starting back three tonight.
Inter go into the clash on the back of two straight wins, including a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sassuolo last weekend. Lautaro Martinez returns to the lineup after overcoming back problems, while Josep Martinez plays in goal.
For Chivu, the trip to Sardinia is an important test of continuity.
