When Callum Hudson Odoi joined German side Bayer Leverkusen on loan last summer, most Chelsea fans were happy, it was a move that would mean Callum would get regular game time and would be joining a league where many young attackers such as Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz have seen their best days. It was hoped that this loan move could be the catalyst for Callum to rediscover some confidence and form after suffering inconsistency since a ruptured Achilles injury ruled him out for 141 days in 2019.

However, a few months into the loan move, Callum has only registered one assist in 11 matches and scored no goals at all. Tonight, things got even worse for the 22 year old as he was substituted at half time in Bayer Leverkusen’s game against VFL Bochum after failing to complete a take on or create a chance.

For Callum to get back into contention for a place in Chelsea’s star studded 2023/24 squad, he is going to have to start performing very well for the remainder of his loan and even then, there is no guarantee that Todd Boehly and Behdad Egbhali won’t just see that good form as a good opportunity to cash in on him.

The next few months could help decide what happens but my feeling right now is that it will be a sad ending to a Chelsea career that once had so much promise.
