Manchester United are heading into the final stretch of the season with clarity over one of their most experienced figures, Casemiro, as the squad prepares for a decisive run of fixtures.

With consistency becoming crucial at this stage, stability in selection has started to play a major role in the team’s recent performances.

Casemiro has made 29 appearances this season, starting 28 games so far, becoming a vital part of Michael Carrick’s set up.

However, now an important contractual detail has now been resolved, removing any complications that could have prevented Casemiro being started in the final few months of the season.

It has emerged that a clause in Casemiro’s contract, which would have automatically triggered a one-year extension if he reached 35 Premier League starts in his final season, has been mutually waived, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

The agreement was reached back in January, during discussions between the club and the player regarding his future.

Earlier in the campaign, United had already informed the Brazilian that they would not be extending his stay beyond the current deal.

By the start of 2026, Casemiro chose to make that situation public, with the club supporting his decision to address it openly.

Despite the clarity over his departure, the midfielder’s role on the pitch has only grown in importance.

Since Michael Carrick took charge, Casemiro has put together a run of 14 consecutive Premier League starts.

His experience and control in midfield have provided balance during a period where results have been vital.

This is a key part of the agreement to ignore the clause that would have triggered an extension.

There’s no doubt over United wanting to use Casemiro, the main issue with an extension lies with his finances.

Casemiro is one of the most expensive players for United, earning £350,000 per week, a wage The Red Devils are keen to stop paying.

Earlier in the season it was clear that keeping the veteran midfielder would have required a new contract with cut wages, as an extension would see his hefty salary continue.

As such, an extension was seemingly out of the question, with the contract clause set to force United into an extra year of paying his wage, with the only work around being to substitute him on early in the game to technically avoid him starting.

However, with the clause no longer a factor, there is nothing standing in the way of Casemiro featuring in every remaining match this season.

For Casemiro, it shows a firm decision to leave the club instead of forcing an extra year on his existing wage.

For United, it allows them to rely fully on one of their most seasoned players as they push to secure a strong finish and potentially lock in Champions League football.
