Fiorentina midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli has returned to training with La Viola for the first time in the 2023-24 season, five months after the 26-year-old failed a medical with Premier League side Bournemouth.

Castrovilli had been set to join Bournemouth in a reported €12m deal in August, however, his medical checks revealed that his knee had not sufficiently recovered from a cruciate ligament injury in 2022, and so, he was subsequently sent back to Tuscany.

The four-time Italy international had keyhole surgery on August 11 in an attempt to repair the damage to his knee, but it was not known at the time how long his recovery period would last.

Five months later, Castrovilli is back in training with the first-team at Viola Park, which he announced with a post on his instagram profile.

Castrovilli’s post was short and sweet, announcing: “I’m back” along with a picture of himself from Tuesday’s session.

A number of Fiorentina teammates past and present have sent Castrovilli messages of congratulations after his return to training, including striker Lucas Beltran, Galatasaray’s Lucas Torreira, and current Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
