CELTIC’S SCOTTISH CUP FINALS – Number 22…CELTIC 6-1 HIBS – HAMPDEN, 6 MAY 1972 – Another of the more famous Celtic Scottish Cup finals in which Dixie Deans emulated the feat of Jimmy Quinn by scoring a hat trick in a Scottish Cup final.

It was a great achievement for Dixie, who only two and a half weeks ago had infamously missed a penalty in the shoot out which deprived Celtic of a chance in another European Cup final.

The opposition were Hibs who had had a good season, and it was often said that Celtic played their best football against Hibs. So it turned out to-day. McNeill scored first, Deans then scored his hat-trick (his second goal and Celtic’s third being a sight to behold) before Lou Macari scored another two to confirm Celtic’s 22nd Scottish Cup victory. Ex Celt Bertie Auld came on as a substitute for Hibs.

The record 20th century Scottish Cup final score line. Celtic also scored six goals in League Cup finals against Hibs, 6-2 in 1969 and 6-3 in 1974, where Dixie Deans also scored a hat-trick. Dixie Deans became in the history books the first (and to time of writing the only) player to have scored hat-tricks in both a Scottish Cup and League Cup Final.

Lisbon Lion Jim Craig’s last game for Celtic after a marvellous career. Fellow Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld was a Hibs’ substitute on the day, while Kenny Dalglish and Dixie Deans win their first Scottish Cup medals. Celtic had now created a Scottish record of scoring 19 goals in one Scottish cup campaign.

Two jets flew in over 250 Celtic fans from Canada into Prestwick airport on the day before the match. They paid $370 for a four day trip to Scotland….
