Celtic have held discussions with Jeffrey Schlupp over extending his stay at the club. The 32-year-old arrived on a loan until the end of the campaign but his Crystal Palace deal is now at an end, meaning he is free to speak to clubs.
Schlupp came off the bench as Celtic lost on penalties in the Scottish Cup Final. However, it might not be his last game for the club. As reported by Sky Sports News’ Anthony Joseph, Celtic have held discussions with the player over a deal.
It seems like an unlikely move for Celtic to make given that Schlupp’s Palace deal was said to be worth £70k-a-week. The player will fancy a long term contract that maximises his earning potential. Celtic will not want to offer the player a deal that places him as a top earner, especially with Kieran Tierney returning to the club.
Tierney has agreed a pre-contract to make a sensational return to Celtic this summer. The Scotland Internationalist will slot into the left back berth but Brendan Rodgers will want adequate cover to manage KT’s game time to minimise the risk of overload and injury.
Celtic have offered Greg Taylor a new deal but the comments from Brendan Rodgers appear to indicate that the player is mulling his future over and will provide an update in the close season. The report states that Celtic have left it up to the player to decide whether he wishes to stay. It is understandable that Celtic will want to keep the player given his role in the team but the 27-year-old might not wish to take a reduced role with Tierney returning.
With Kieran Tierney returning there seems to be only one spot left in the squad so it’s one of two from Greg Taylor and Jeffrey Schlupp, who will have to take a deal that is in line with the realities of Celtic’s wage structure. If he can get more somewhere in England that so be it.
Taylor should stay at Celtic. His USP requires a team at the top end of the table, dominating in their national league. He will have to look outside these shores to find that but he’s already got it at Celtic. Taylor was one of the few Celtic players who put in a decent performance at the Scottish Cup Final at the weekend.
