Celtic’s crushing 2-0 defeat to Dundee United dealt a heavy blow to their Scottish Premiership aspirations.

With this result, Martin O’Neill’s team are virtually out of the title race, leaving Hearts and Rangers as the only contenders in the final stretch of the season.

Martin O’Neill expresses his anger at the defeat against Dundee United

After the match, O’Neill didn’t hide his frustration and was direct in his analysis: “Disappointing result, disappointing performance, especially in the second half. I thought we had possession in the first half; obviously, we didn’t do enough with it. For short periods, we camped out outside their penalty area. They defended in numbers, which is to their credit.”

His words reflect not only respect for the opponent, but also self-criticism of his team’s performance. The manager made it clear that, despite periods of dominance, Celtic failed to turn their possession into clear goalscoring opportunities, which proved decisive.

The second half, in particular, was singled out as the team’s worst moment in a match that ultimately proved crucial to their title aspirations.

With the league title virtually out of reach, Celtic now have only one objective: the Scottish Cup. Winning this tournament appears to be the only way to salvage an inconsistent season and allow O’Neill to leave the club with a trophy.
