After Napoli’s win over Braga and Inter’s 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad on Tuesday evening, three Serie A sides have now booked their places in the Champions League Round of 16, including Lazio, who have already cemented their place in the knockout rounds.
There could still potentially be a full-house of Italian teams in the next stage of the competition if Milan beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on Wednesday and if Paris Saint-Germain lose to Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
While the official classifications will be confirmed after the games on Wednesday, there are now only two groups that have qualification left to play for.
Those are Milan’s Group, F, and Group H, where Barcelona, Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk are all still in with a chance of qualifying.
The teams who have already confirmed their place in the Champions League Round of 16 are: Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, Arsenal, PSV, Real Madrid, Napoli, Real Sociedad, Inter, Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Manchester City and RB Leipzig.
Four spots remain up for grabs among Groups F and H.
For the Round of 16, Champions League rules state that teams cannot face a team from the same nation, nor can they be drawn against a team from the same group.
Inter, Napoli and Lazio would not be able to face each other until the semi-final stages at the earliest.
Teams will also be seeded, meaning that group winners can only face teams who finished second and vice-versa. Only Groups A, B, C, D have had their final standings confirmed as of yet. Of the Italian teams, that includes Inter and Napoli, but not Lazio and Milan.
At the moment, Inter could definitely face one of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Real Madrid or Manchester City. They could also be matched against one of Dortmund, PSG, Newcastle, Barcelona, Porto or Shkahtar depending on Wednesday’s results.
Napoli, meanwhile, could also get Bayern, Arsenal, Manchester City or Real Sociedad as well as the same pool of teams from Groups F and H.
It will be a similar situation for Lazio if they finish second in their group behind Atletico on Monday. In second, they would get Bayern, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Manchester City or a team from Group F or H.
If the Biancocelesti leapfrog Atletico into first, Lazio could face Copenhagen, PSV, RB Leipzig, or either of the eventual runners up from Groups F and H.
Milan will need results to go their way on Wednesday, but will not be able to finish at the top of their group. If the Rossoneri do qualify, they could draw Bayern, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, or the winner of Group H, which is currently Barcelona.
The official draw for the Champions League Round of 16 will take place on Monday December 18 at 11.00 GMT and will be streamed live on UEFA’s website.
