Should Paris Saint-Germain clinch the UEFA Champions League this Saturday, they will match a rare feat first achieved by Celtic 58 years ago by completing a quadruple…

PSG have defeated three English teams along the way to reach Saturday’s final, including knocking out Kieran Tierney’s Arsenal in the semi-final.

Celtic remain the only club in world football to have secured four major trophies in a single season

A reminder – In 1967, Celtic became the first British side to lift the European Cup, famously beating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon, and remain the only club in world football to have secured four major trophies in a single season.

Jock Stein’s side also won the Glasgow Cup, making it a Quintuple, but no side in Europe has ever won the league, two cup competitions and the European Cup, now called the Champions League.

That same season, Jock Stein’s men famously edged out Rangers by three points to claim the Scottish league title, while also defeating Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final and overcoming Rangers in the League Cup Final at Hampden.

While many clubs have secured trebles, none in world football have ever managed to claim four major trophies in a single season, other than Celtic.

Paris Saint-Germain could equal Celtic’s record this weekend – but only if they manage to overcome Inter Milan in this weekend’s blockbuster final in Munich.

PSG’s unique opportunity to equal Celtic’s record

Luis Enrique’s side have dominated domestically, securing Ligue 1 with a commanding 19-point lead over Marseille and sealing the Coupe de France with a convincing 3-0 victory against Reims last weekend.

France’s League Cup, the Coupe de la Ligue, was scrapped five years ago due to a packed match calendar. Their third domestic trophy, the Trophée des Champions – a Super Cup contested by the league and cup winners – was claimed by PSG after they defeated Monaco in a match held in Qatar.

Winning in Munich would make them the first team to replicate the legendary successes of Celtic’s illustrious 1966/1967 squad, but it wouldn’t quite be the Quintuple.

Ironically if PSG do win then both theirs and Celtic’s quadruples will have been secured after a win over Inter Milan in the European Cup/ Champions League final.
