The league phase of the 2025/26 Champions League is now over – let’s see who made it into our final Champions League XI for this stage of the competition.
We saw some massive wins for Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, while the likes of Real Madrid, Ajax and Napoli all fell to defeat. That aside, who were this week’s top individual performers?
It isn’t every day that you see goalkeepers scoring goals – let alone goals as crucial as the last-minute header netted by Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin.
The Ukrainian international climbed above everyone to power a headed effort into the back of the net in the last minute of the game. This result gave Benfica the boost they needed to reach the playoffs – and he scored it against Real Madrid, of all teams.
Bodo/Glimt sprang another surprise when they picked up a massive away win over Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid – Fredrik Sjovold was arguably their star of the show.
He scored their first goal of the game to level things up against the Spanish giants, then put in a solid defensive shift to win the three points.
Virgil van Dijk isn’t having the best season of his career, but his performance against Qarabag in midweek certainly couldn’t be faulted.
Not only did Van Dijk maintain a clean sheet against the Azerbaijani outfit, he also notched up a hattrick of assists along the way.
A pattern is developing in Cristian Romero’s season – while the Argentinian World Cup winner has often struggled in the Premier League, he has thrived in the Champions League.
He handily kept Eintracht Frankfurt at bay, keeping a clean sheet for the Lilywhites – he also registered an assist along the way.
Bayer Leverkusen needed a win to secure their spot in the playoffs – with Alejandro Grimaldo’s help, they did just that, defeating Villarreal by a score of 3-0.
Grimaldo scored the final goal of the game, deftly volleying a cross from Lucas Vasquez into the corner of the net – he also helped them keep a clean sheet.
Liverpool, like Tottenham, have offset their Premier League woes with Champions League success. They demolished Qarabag by a score of 6-0, with Alexis Mac Allister running the show.
The former Brighton midfielder scored a brace, putting forth a tireless display as the Reds outclassed their opponents.
Club Brugge have been real dark horses in the Champions League this year. Aleksandar Stankovic spearheaded their 3-0 victory over Marseille, which saw them reach the playoffs.
Stankovic registered a pair of assists and scored their last goal of the game – he was directly involved in every goal that Brugge scored on Wednesday evening.
Lamine Yamal continues to stake his claim as one of the best players in the world as Barcelona ran triumphant over Copenhagen.
Despite falling behind early on, the Catalonians were ready for a fight – Yamal scored a goal and notched up an assist as they eventually picked up a 4-1 win.
Following a lengthy injury absence, Kai Havertz is finally back up and running at Arsenal – the German international certainly hasn’t missed a beat.
Arsenal faced more resistance than they might have expected against Kairat, but were still able to record a 3-2 win – Havertz both notched up an assist and scored a goal along the way.
Benfica faced a monumental challenge when they took on Real Madrid, but Jose Mourinho’s men were up to the task – and none of them were as impressive as Andreas Schjelderup.
He scored twice against Los Blancos, finding the back of the net in each half. Aged just 21, top clubs will have surely taken notice of this.
The third Benfica star to make our XI, Vangelis Pavlidis put forth an heroic centre-forward display to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
He notched up two assists, setting up both of Schjelderup’s goals, before finding the back of the net with a neatly-taken penalty.
