The season has started with a fresh start at Old Trafford, but questions still linger in the air: Will we ever again be that dominant team in England and Europe? The excitement is still intact, even if the last few summers have taught us not to expect too much. With Ruben Amorim at the helm and some reinforcements already in place, the fans have a mixture of anxiety and hope. There is desire, but there are also doubts, and just when it seems that all the focus is on finding the new number nine, an unexpected name appears on the table.
United’s last few seasons have not been easy. We have had ups and downs, key injuries and too many games where creativity and punch were conspicuous by their absence. The defence took steps forward, but the midfield showed cracks, especially when Casemiro went flat. Amorim wants to change that. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have arrived, two promising attacking players, although the feeling that something is still missing in the engine room has not gone away. So, now a player we know well is starting to sound strong.
As reported by Ben Jacobs, Wilfred Ndidi is still one of the players who could leave Leicester this summer. Bayer Leverkusen were the latest to make enquiries, but Manchester United have not been left behind. The club have already had talks with the Nigerian’s entourage. However, there is one condition that before signing another midfielder, someone must leave.
Ndidi has a release clause of just £9m, a low figure for someone with more than 200 Premier League appearances. The 28-year-old’s defensive profile, ball-winning ability and physical strength make him ideal to partner Manuel Ugarte or Bruno Fernandes in a double pivot. Moreover, he would fit in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation perfectly.
As a fan, we have mixed feelings. On the one hand, Ndidi at that price is a bargain. He is strong, aggressive, has good tactical awareness, and knows the pace of the Premier League inside out. The midfielder would give us something the current squad doesn’t have, and that is a real shield in front of the defence. You can’t ignore that kind of opportunity.
However, on the other hand, our priority is a striker. Last season, we suffered and scored just 44 goals. We can’t afford to repeat that. Cunha and Mbeumo will help, but we don’t know if it will be enough, with Rasmus Hojlund not performing last season. Besides, signing Ndidi means selling someone. Casemiro seems the logical candidate, but will we find a buyer right now?
If it were up to us, we would sign Ndidi today. At that price, you just can’t find players like that. Even if the timing isn’t ideal, losing him to an opponent like Leverkusen or even Everton would be frustrating. If we can free up space and secure a quality number nine, then it’s a no-brainer.
