Major League Soccer club Charlotte FC is an expansion side that began its inaugural season with a 5-8-1 record in league play. Apparently, that was bad enough for the team to make a switch ahead of June following Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders.
As noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Charlotte fired head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez. No reason for the decision was given in the official club statement. Assistant coach Christian Lattanzio was promoted to the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the campaign.
Assistant coach Mikel Antia, head fitness coach Cristobal Fuentes Nieto and first team video analyst Luis Piedrahita were also relieved of their duties.
"This is a difficult decision, but one we feel is best for the team at this time," club owner David Tepper said for the release. "I want to thank Miguel and his staff for their hard work during our first season and wish them the best in their future endeavors."
Charlotte sporting director Zoran Krneta added:
"We appreciate the contributions of Miguel and his staff to our club, and wish them well moving forward in their careers. We are excited about this opportunity for Christian. He is a very experienced coach who has made a tremendous impact on our squad this season."
Charlotte will next face the New York Red Bulls on June 11.
