De la Torre made 37 appearances for San Diego last season and scored five goals. The 27-year-old’s performances helped San Diego reach the 2025 Western Conference Final during the club’s expansion season.
Known for his box-to-box style of play and technical skills, de la Torre could help Charlotte improve after the club was eliminated by New York City FC in round one of the playoffs.
“Luca is entering the prime of his career and will bolster our midfield as he brings technical ability, experience from a top league in the world, and a knowledge and understanding of Major League Soccer,” Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said. “He compliments the existing players we have in our squad as he is a versatile central midfielder who connects play and excels in progressing the ball. We want to continue to be a destination for USMNT players, and Luca is another who is looking forward to playing in the Queen City.”
De la Torre is under contract through June 30, 2029. His contract possesses a club option for the 2029-30 season.
Charlotte sent San Diego FC $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money to complete the deal.
De la Torre made eight appearances for the United States in 2025. He will be looking to impress at his new club to ensure that he’s part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
