Chelsea have to like their chances of pushing the usual favorites for the Premier League title this season, as their midfield and attacking upgrades have paid off handsomely, to the point where the club is no longer as reliant on Cole Palmer to save the day.
The defense could use some work, though, but even if Chelsea don’t sign a center back this January to appease manager Enzo Maresca, a few players have stepped up beyond their means to help the club.
One of those players is 26-year-old center back Trevoh Chalobah, and while he is flawed and could be exposed by the truly great teams, the English defender has been a real asset to the Blues this season and one of the better central defenders in the Premier League overall.
And therefore, he has earned himself a huge opportunity on the strength of his play for Chelsea this season. With England national team starter Marc Guehi, who used to play for Chelsea before becoming a top class player for Crystal Palace, injured, Chalobah is about to get into the England national team squad under manager Thomas Tuchel (another former Chelsea guy).
This is a huge spot for Chalobah and raises both his own profile and the club’s stock overall. Yes, it comes more as an injury replacement for Guehi rather than Chalobah’s form alone, but he still earned this shot and deserves some good natured applause for it.
