Chelsea were able to prevail against underdogs Wrexham in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup on Saturday, but even though the score line read 4-2, the Blues were agonizingly close to getting sent packing.
There were several terrible performances from a Chelsea perspective, but nobody drew stronger criticisms than center back Tosin Adarabioyo, who has been a liability all season long.
Tosin is now the poster child for Chelsea of free agent signings gone wrong and a reminder that just because someone is free in world football, it does not mean you should sign them.
Because for Chelsea, the cost of being saddled with a well below average center back who has to start significant games is huge, and while Liam Rosenior should never be starting him at this point, he has little choice with the depth issues plaguing the squad in defense. They have to rotate at some point.
But Tosin is so bad on a week to week basis that he costs the team. He makes everyone around him worse, too. Benoit Badiashile is not a Chelsea level player either, but he is at least passable next to the right center back.
Next to the plodding Tosin who cannot read the game at a Premier League level, Badiashile becomes just as big of a liability. Chelsea are missing leaders and real defenders who know how to mark strikers and keep up with them off the ball, and Tosin epitomizes that.
After watching Tosin’s train wreck performance against Wrexham drag the entire team down and nearly cost Chelsea the game defensively, Rosenior and the Blues only have one option with the former Fulham free agent: get rid. Do not start. Avoid at all costs.
