Chelsea include striker in offer to sign Jeremy Jacquet ahead of Liverpool

Chelsea’s pursuit of Jeremy Jacquet has been one of the longer stories of this January window, and it still does not look close to a resolution.

Rennes’ reluctance to engage in serious talks seems tied to the timing, as clubs rarely want to lose key players mid-season.

The asking price is also a sticking point, with Rennes holding out for more than they received for Jeremy Doku, pushing the fee north of £57 million.

Chelsea are not alone in their interest. Liverpool are also working on a deal before the deadline, while Bayern Munich have kept an eye on the situation without making any formal moves yet.

With time running short, it appears Chelsea are making one final push to get something done before the window closes.

Blues reportedly bid £43m and forward in latest push for Jeremy Jacquet

Reports from France, specifically via Sport, claim Chelsea put forward an offer to Rennes that included a striker and a £43 million fee for Jacquet.

But it appears that approach has not made any difference, with the publication adding: “Chelsea have multiplied their offensives – up to €50 million (£43m) mentioned, with a striker swap at stake – but Habib Beye slams the door: ‘Not for sale this winter!’ The Rennes president is betting on stability for European dreams, postponing any sale until the spring at a stratospheric price (€60 million+).”

Chelsea have not confirmed which striker was put forward in the deal, but Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana or Tyrique George are all possibilities.

Chelsea’s refusal to pay Jeremy Jacquet’s price tag is strange

If Chelsea see Jeremy Jacquet as a future star, it raises the question of why they have not made a stronger push to finalise the deal.

There is always hesitation about paying too much, but if they are that convinced about his potential, it seems odd to risk losing him to another club, especially with Liverpool interested.

Jacquet has already shown a preference for Chelsea over Liverpool.

The financial situation at Stamford Bridge is not clear from the outside, but there does appear to be some reluctance to spend, particularly after shelving their plans for a new central midfielder.
