John Terry has been back in the news recently as he discussed a lot of things about Chelsea both past and present. While some of his comments on previous eras like Kevin de Bruyne and Mo Salah are likely to catch the eye, one thing that will please fans was his unreserved praise for one of the newest signings.
Speaking about Brazilian star Joao Pedro, the former defender heaped on the praise. He noted how difficult it can be to hit the ground running and loves the fact that the attacker has been putting the ball in the net already. He also has praise for how the former Brighton man trains, indicating that many players are impressed with the forward.
With the summer signing hitting the ground running it has left memories of Nicolas Jackson behind and forced a harder fight from Liam Delap for the starting striker spot. Despite a lengthy goal drought, the newcomer has been a crucial part of one of the league’s best goalscoring units.
Since joining in the middle of the Club World Cup, the Brazilian has had 10 goal contributions in 17 appearances. Seventeen of those were goals for himself while three were assists. He has most notably been good in the league, where seven of his goal contributions have come.
According to FBref’s statistics, Pedro has been the second-best creator at the club in this campaign. He has an npXG of 3.8 across all competitions and an xAG of 2.5. He is outperforming this slightly which is pivotal as clinicality has long been an issue for the Blues and their attackers.
He has been able to do some great work without Cole Palmer, particularly in recent weeks where he’s been given more freedom to move around by either Marc Guiu or Delap.
