The FIFA Club World Cup continues to deliver with surprises as Flamengo from Brazil defeated Chelsea 3-1 at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The Brazilian side is top of Group D ahead of Chelsea after two games played.

Chelsea’s chances of finishing first in the group have dropped significantly, and they have yet to secure a place in the knockout stages. One of the players who had a poor day on the pitch was Nicolas Jackson, who didn't start the match.

Chelsea's manager, Enzo Maresca, subbed on Jackson for Liam Delap in the 64th minute, and his cameo in the game was a short one.

Just four minutes onto the pitch, Jackson received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Flamengo’s Ayrton Lucas. The Senegalese striker did not complain as he knew the tackle was late and Chelsea's hope for a comeback was reduced.

The red card happened three minutes after Flamengo scored two goals to complete the comeback. After the game, a Chelsea legend was left angry and frustrated by Jackson's red card.

Mikel John Obi Criticizes Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea legend Mikel John Obi expressed strong frustration over Jackson’s red card. The former Chelsea midfielder recalls when Jackson received a red card during a Premier League game against Newcastle United just last month.

Mikel John Obi: "Unbelievable. Stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. I don't know what is going through his [Jackson] head. Your team needs you, and you do that. He did that at Newcastle. Now he's done this. I don't care what his frustration is."

Newcastle United defeated Chelsea 2-0 on May 11 at St. James' Park. It was the 36th matchday of the 2024-25 Premier League season, and Jackson received the red card in the 35th minute of the game.

After receiving another straight red card just a month after the one against Newcastle, questions are raised about the player. Mikel believes that Jackson is risking his spot at Chelsea, especially after the club signed Delap this summer.

Mikel John Obi: "Nicolas Jackson needs to have a look at himself and think where he wants his Chelsea career to go from here. The manager has brought in a striker in Liam Delap, and now if the manager starts to doubt you, if he keeps making mistakes and letting his teammates and the club down, then it is time for Delap to start the games."

Enzo Maresca had few words to describe his thoughts on the red card Jackson received today against Flamengo. The manager said, "It was a red card, nothing to say."

Who does Chelsea play next?

After losing 3-1 against Flamengo, Chelsea needs a win in their last group stage game. Chelsea takes on Esperance on Tuesday at Lincoln Financial Field. LAFC and Esperance are below Chelsea in Group D.

If Chelsea advances to the next round, they will play one of the teams in Group C. That group includes Bayern Munich, Benfica, Boca Juniors, and Auckland City.

Chelsea is now projected to finish second in Group D. They could potentially play Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, as the German team seems favorites to top Group C.
