Chelsea officially sign Danny Welbeck

Danny Welbeck has already had an impressive Premier League career since coming through the Manchester United academy in 2008.

After making 142 appearances for United, scoring 29 goals and grabbing 16 assists, the fromer England international made his move from Old Trafford to the Emirates in 2014 for £17 million.

For Arsenal, Welbeck made 126 appearances, scoring 32 goals and grabbing 13 assists, however left at the end of his contract in 2019, sealing a free transfer to Watford.

After a year with Watford, however, suffering relegation, Welbeck avoided the drop to the Championship by joining Brighton, where he’s had his career-best seasons.

Last season alone, he netted 13 goals in 37 Premier League games, his best season on record, adding to his 51 goals and 18 assists in 201 games with the Seagulls.

As such, it’s no surprise he’s grabbed attention from top clubs once again, with the striker now officially leaving Brighton for Chelsea.

Announcing the move on their official site, Chelsea announced: “Chelsea is delighted to announce the signing of Danny Welbeck from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

“The striker, who has been capped 42 times by England, has signed a contract until 2028 and will join up with Xabi Alonso’s squad during our pre-season tour.”

Speaking for the first time since moving to Stamford Bridge, Welbeck commented: “When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride. Knowing the history of Chelsea, it’s a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.

“I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time. I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.

“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”

The striker has signed a two-year contract, seeing him remain with The Blues until 2028 after his move from Brighton.

Now, at the age of 35-years-old, Welbeck has shown that he has no intention of stopping soon, as the former United man is still continuing to excel.
