This is a Chelsea predicted lineup for the second leg of their Europa Conference League tie with Copenhagen. The blues have a slim 2-1 lead to take into Stamford Bridge with the big boogeyman of an Arsenal clash on Sunday occupying space in their mind. Enzo Maresca has his work cut out to rotate enough to stay competitive for the weekend without letting the small lead evaporate against the Danes.
Rob Sanchez has re-emerged as the first-choice goalkeeper with Filip Jorgensen likely taking over for European games once again. In defence, Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Malo Gusto are the starters.
Reece James has moved more into midfield with Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all occupying the deeper lying spots. Injuries have limited options in the attacking spots with Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrique George spread across the attacking midfield spots while Pedro Neto and Shim Mheuka start up front.
Maresca has continued to play possession-focused football with his ideal in-possession setup being a 3-2-4-1 this has usually started out as a 4-2-3-1 base but recently has looked a bit more like a 4-3-3 with two midfielders focusing on defensive work while another moves into attacking midfield. One full-back also joins the attack, usually Cucurella to overload the opposition.
With these tweaks has come good results with the team on a run of three consecutive wins with two clean sheets in that stretch. With three wins from their last five things appear to be looking up for the Blues.
There wasn’t a lot of certainty given by the manager who said that Palmer, James, and Nkunku only trained on Wednesday after the squad was hit with an illness. Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke are both expected out until the international break while Romeo Lavia and Fofana aren’t in the Conference League squad. Mykhailo Mudryk remains suspended while Gusto missed the Leicester clash with injury and may not be available here.
