How Chelsea Have Lined Up Recently

Filip Jorgensen and Rob Sanchez have shared duties in goal. Sanchez missed the tie with Djurgarden on Thursday with an injury however which could see him miss out here depending on the severity. The back line has rotated meaning Marc Cucurella, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Reece James,  Josh Acheampong, Moises Caicedo, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill have all started across the back four recently.

Caicedo and James do also play in central midfield with Romeo Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, or Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also being used in those spots. Enzo has moved into the number ten position when needed which is usually reserved for Cole Palmer.

Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto, Tyrique George, and Nicolas Jackson share the other three attacking spots with George being used both on the wing and as a striker at times.

Chelsea Recent Form and Tactics

Enzo Maresca has continued using a 4-2-3-1 base setup that shifts when in possession. He has found success by using more of a diamond midfield as opposed to the box midfield. This sees Cucurella invert into an attacking spot near the opposition box as opposed to inverting to a deeper midfield spot next to Lavia or Caicedo. This allows the team to get more bodies in the box to open up opponents and get dangerous chances away.

The team have only lost once in their last eight with five wins in that spell. The change in tactics appears to have worked with the once profligate squad now capable of scoring from multiple positions, lifting the burden off of Palmer amidst his goal drought. Defensively, things aren’t as good as they had been at times this term but clean sheets against Tottenham, Brentford, and Everton helped them gain crucial points.

Chelsea Injuries to Consider

In his pre-match conference, the manager confirmed that the only guaranteed injuries are Marc Guiu and Aaron Anselmino (Wesley Fofana once again not mentioned despite being out) while Nkunku and Sanchez are being assessed.
