This is a Chelsea predicted lineup for their Premier League clash with Manchester United. They visit Old Trafford after back-to-back winless outings, needing a win at a venue they haven’t won in since 2013. Sir Alex Ferguson was manager the last time the Blues beat the Red Devils at their home in the league. It will be interesting to see how Enzo Maresca lines up with fatigue catching up, some minor injuries, and a midweek defeat to Bayer,n potentially crushing morale, big task for the manager to avoid a tailspin.
Rob Sanchez has been the first choice in goal since the Club World Cup and looks likely to retain his place here. The back four has been interesting with Marc Cucurella and Jorrel Hato starting on the left recently. Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo is the central pairing despite some lapses recently. Wesley Fofana made his return after months out on the right instead of centrally, Malo Gusto is the usual first-choice right-back this season.
Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo has been the defensive midfield pivot for most matches this season despite their individual issues. There was a slight alteration against the Bavarians as Reece James came into the pivot, allowing a formation shift. Enzo was pushed to attacking midfield in that one.
Joao Pedro has been used as the attacking midfielder and may be his best position but injuries have forced him to operate as the striker. Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, Facundo Buonanotte and Cole Palmer have played in the attacking spots either as wingers or replacement CAMs.
Maresca has used a 4-2-3-1 on paper but the reality on the pitch is usually very different. Just looking at the Champions League outing they had Enzo at the 10, Palmer on the right moving inside to be another 10, and Gusto operating as an overlapping full-back. Compare that to Brentford where right-back Fofana was part of the back three while Hato tried to move into midfield and Gittens stretched the field as a lone left-sided player. The personnel available impacts who moves where and how things look in reality with Caicedo occasionally left as the lone sweeper in front of the defence.
Domestically, the Blues remain undefeated with two wins and two draws, a 3-1 loss in their Champions League return saw them crash back to earth a little. Defensive frailties are rearing their head after warning signs were fired against Fulham and Crystal Palace with five goals shipped in their last two fixtures. Scoring hasn’t been a problem but they’ll need to shore up the back line to get wins more consistently.
According to PremierInjuries there are a number of absentees to deal with. Levi Colwill is sidelined long term with Liam Delap and the suspended Mykhailo Mudryk. Dario Essugo got hurt over the international break with Benoit Badiashile and Romeo Lavia still recovering from their own injuries. There’s also some load management to consider as Palmer is just returning from a groin injury, Pedro has played a lot of minutes this season, Neto has played a lot, and Caicedo has been nursing a problem since before the international break.
With a cup tie against Lincoln City coming up, this might be the last chance to go strong before rotating and resting some of the regulars.
