Chelsea’s summer recruitment drive has taken a decisive turn as they move closer to signing Ajax’s defensive prodigy, Jorrel Hato. Personal terms have already been agreed, and the teenager has made it clear to Ajax officials that he wants to make a move to Stamford Bridge.
The two clubs are now in advanced negotiations, with discussions revolving around a fee in the region of €40 million. That is a big figure for someone who just turned 19, but given Hato’s rise and potential, Chelsea sees it as a smart long-term investment.
At just 19 years old, Hato is already one of Europe’s most talked-about young defenders. Born in Rotterdam and raised through the Sparta Rotterdam academy, he joined Ajax in 2018 and hasn’t looked back since. He made his senior debut for Ajax in early 2023, becoming one of the youngest players ever featured for the club. Since then, he’s racked up over 100 senior appearances, an astonishing stat for someone still in their teens.
Last season, he was a constant in the Ajax backline, making 31 Eredivisie appearances and even chipping in with three goals. But it is not just his consistency that’s stood out. Hato also made history when he captained Ajax in the Europa League at just 17 years old, becoming the youngest player ever to do so.
Awards have followed naturally. He won the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy for Ajax’s best academy talent and was recently named Eredivisie Talent of the Year. Internationally, he’s already broken into the senior Netherlands squad and has six caps.
Chelsea’s interest in Hato isn’t new, but things have ramped up significantly in recent weeks. Enzo Maresca and the Blues are eager to reshape their defense, and Hato ticks many boxes. First and foremost, he is versatile. He is just as comfortable playing as a center-back as he is at left-back. That kind of flexibility is gold in the modern game, especially for a Chelsea side that’s had to juggle injuries and inconsistency across the backline.
He’s played 70+ games as a center back and 85+ as a left back. Such versatility in this age is something you don’t regularly see. Then there is the technical side. Hato’s composure on the ball, his timing in tackles, and his left-footed balance make him an ideal long-term successor in Chelsea’s defensive unit. With questions about inconsistency in defense, no backup for the irreplaceable Marc Cucurella, and Renato Veiga reportedly on the way out, there is a clear gap that Hato could fill.
But beyond the tactical logic, this is also about long-term planning. Chelsea has made it a clear strategy to sign top-tier young talent, players who can grow into stars at Stamford Bridge. Hato fits that profile perfectly. With 111 senior games under his belt and elite-level exposure at Ajax and with the Dutch national team, he’s further developed than most 18-year-olds.
So, what’s holding things up? As always, it comes down to the money. Ajax has reportedly valued Hato at €60 million. Chelsea, on the other hand, believes the fair price is somewhere between €35 and €40 million. After days of negotiations, both parties seem to be converging around the €40 million mark, which looks to be the sweet spot that could get the deal over the line.
That price tag might raise a few eyebrows, but in today’s market, €40 million for a teenager of Hato’s calibre could end up looking like a bargain. Chelsea fans remember well the exits of talents like Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guéhi too early. Hato could be the one they hold on to.
Perhaps the most important detail in all this is that the player wants the move. Multiple reports confirm that Hato has personally informed Ajax management and his coach of his desire to join Chelsea as soon as possible. That clarity from the player’s side has helped accelerate talks between the two clubs.
It also eased fears of a potential transfer tug-of-war. With Hato’s heart set on Stamford Bridge, Chelsea now has a clear runway to wrap things up quickly, provided they can settle the fee with Ajax.
Should Chelsea finalize the deal and all signs point to them doing so, it could be a turning point in their summer window. The Blues are also working on a move for RB Leipzig Midfielder Xavi Simons and are expected to offload players like Joao Felix, Nico Jackson, and Renato Veiga to balance the books.
Hato’s arrival would likely come hand-in-hand with some reshuffling in the squad. But if Maresca and the Chelsea hierarchy get this done, they will have secured one of the most promising defenders in Europe, one who’s already shown he can handle pressure, wear the armband, and play at the highest level.
