Chelsea’s £20m backup goalkeeper set for summer exit despite impressing Rosenior

Chelsea saw a few players leave during the January window, and it looks like more will follow come summer.

On deadline day, Tyrique George, Axel Disasi and Aaron Anselmino all left Stamford Bridge on loan.

Anselmino may still be part of Chelsea’s future plans, but the club is expected to move on from George and Disasi. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling’s departure was settled after he agreed to terminate his contract.

Besides George and Disasi, Chelsea might also look to move one of their goalkeepers in the upcoming window.

Filip Jorgensen could leave Chelsea this summer

Filip Jorgensen is currently behind Robert Sanchez in the pecking order, serving as Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper.

But that could change soon, with the club thought to be considering Mike Penders for a first-team role after his loan at Strasbourg.

Simon Phillips suggested on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Penders’ return is indeed part of the club’s plans. If that happens, it would likely mean an exit for Jorgensen at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old had interest from other clubs last month but stayed put. However, a summer move looks unavoidable if Penders comes back into the squad.

If he stays at Stamford Bridge under Liam Rosenior, he risks slipping further down the depth chart to third choice. A move away might be his best option for regular football.

Filip Jorgensen has made a positive impression on Liam Rosenior

If Penders heads out on another loan and Jorgensen remains at Stamford Bridge, Rosenior probably won’t see it as a setback.

The Chelsea manager has been pleased with what he’s seen from his backup goalkeeper so far.

Speaking about an injury Jorgensen recently picked up, Rosenior said: “Unfortunately, he picked something up. Devastated for him, because he’s really impressed me, not just the game at Charlton, but in training, too.”

From Jorgensen’s perspective, the £20m Denmark international will believe he deserves the No.1 spot. Whether Penders stays or goes in the summer, a departure for Jorgensen looks likely.

Even if Sanchez were to move on one day and the Blues didn’t replace him with an outside signing or promote Penders to first choice instead of him, there would still be Lucas Bergstrom for him to compete with.
