The Chicago Fire handled their business in the Round of 16 of the 2025 US Open Cup and will be one of the final eight vying for the trophy after they defeated the New England Revolution 3-1 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on the campus of Providence College in Rhode Island.

An own goal alongside goals from Hugo Cuypers and Philip Zinckernagel was enough for the Fire to earn their spot in Thursday’s Open Cup Quarterfinal draw, needing only three more wins to secure a domestic trophy.

Chicago rolled out a starting lineup full of MLS regulars while New England went with mostly backups and players from New England Revolution II in Providence.

The Fire managed to take the lead before halftime without generating a shot and handled New England’s attack well despite conceding an own goal in the 89th minute.

Chicago’s first-half goal was the result of a slight deflection from New England’s Eric Klein.

Jonathan Bamba had the ball on the left wing in the 39th minute and played the ball up the pitch to Kellyn Acosta, who turned and found Andrew Gutman making a run to his left. Gutman found Bamba in the penalty area with a cross, and Bamba’s shot deflected off Klein and goalkeeper Alex Bono before falling into the New England goal, putting the Fire ahead through a Bamba deflected goal for the second consecutive match.

The Fire’s first official shot came in the 57th minute despite them being up a goal for nearly 20 minutes before then. Rominigue Kouamé took the ball away from Eric Klein in New England’s half of the pitch and immediately played it to Maren Haile-Selassie. The Fire’s number seven brought the ball into the penalty area, but his right-footed effort flew just above the Revolution’s net and went harmlessly out of play.

New England nearly scored another own goal in the 69th minute, but it directly led to the Fire’s second goal of the evening.

Brian Gutiérrez, who entered the match in the 56th minute, whipped in a cross that former Fire center back Wyatt Omsberg knocked off the crossbar but the rebound fell perfectly for Hugo Cuypers, who had no problem tapping the ball into the open net for the unassisted goal to make it 2-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining. That was also the final touch of the match for Cuypers, who went down multiple times in the match after collisions.

Chicago added one more goal for good measure in the 79th minute, and it was a beauty from Philip Zinckernagel. Maren Haile-Selassie played the ball to Zinckernagel, who danced around multiple New England defenders before hitting a right-footed effort into the corner of the net to extend the lead to 3-0.

New England got their consolation goal in the 89th minute when Justin Reynolds accidentally knocked a cross into his own net just as former teammate Alex Monis was ready to bounce on the ball.

The Reynolds own goal made Open Cup history as this was the first time each side scored an own goal in an Open Cup match featuring two MLS sides, according to TheCup.us.

Chicago didn’t generate much of anything in front of goal, except the own goal, in the first half and the halftime messaging from the coaching staff was about that.

“It was challenging at halftime, I think my tone was challenging the group,” said Fire director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter after the match. “I wasn't happy with the performance. I asked them if they were happy with their performance, and they said no. So it was clear, their expectation is that we can perform better. But again, things happen, and I think as long as we recognize and take accountability for it, there's a pathway forward, and that's what the guys did at halftime.”

The Fire will now play in the Quarterfinals on either July 8 or July 9. Their opponent will be determined during the draw on Thursday morning, which is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. CT on the CBS Sports Golazo Network.

Starting 11: Chris Brady (GK), Andrew Gutman, Jack Elliott (C), Christopher Cupps, Omari Glasgow, Kellyn Acosta, Rominigue Kouamé, Dje D’Avilla, Maren Haile-Selassie, Jonathan Bamba, and Hugo Cuypers.
