It was a night to remember for the Chicago Fire’s Omari Glasgow when his side handily defeated the USL Championship’s Detroit City FC 4-0 in the 2025 US Open Cup Round of 32 at SeatGeek Stadium.
The Fire’s Guyanese winner got the start at right back and rewarded his coach’s decision with a goal, his first with the Fire, in the 71st minute to cap off a fabulous run that teammate Jonathan Bamba made down the left wing.
Glasgow, 21, told reporters after the match about finally scoring his first goal with Chicago’s first team on a familiar ground.
“It was a transitional moment and, as a transition, you’ve got to sprint forward as fast as possible,” Glasgow said. “I put in the work to sprint forward, and [Rominigue Kouamé] left it for me. So I must say it was a good transition moment.”
Glasgow has been largely dispatched as a right back in 2025 under Fire director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter despite being an attacking player with Guyana’s national team, where he’s the all-time leading goalscorer. His time with Chicago Fire II, where he played at right winger and right back, helped prepare Glasgow for his role in 2025.
“For two years, I was up and down, right back and right wing. So some of the stuff I’ve already known, which is just to do what the coaches want and adapt. I think I’ve been adapting well at the MLS level and the transition has been good.”
Glasgow credits Jonathan Bamba and the veteran wingers for helping him adjust to the speed of MLS after signing a first-team deal in the offseason.
“From day one, he came in and we trained together. He told me that he liked my style of play but also I learned to be composed. I learned to be a bit more composed from him. So everyday him, and Phil [Zinckernagel], they both play the wing position, and they teach me a lot everyday. The body positioning, when to go forward, when to play it simple, when to be aggressive. So, mostly Jo [Bamba] and Phil, I’ve learned a lot from them since they came into the team.”
