The international transfer window opened as soon as 2025 began and the Chicago Fire are already making moves in the European market ahead of training camp in a few weeks.

The Fire transferred center back Tobias Salquist to FC Nordsjaelland of the Danish Superliga, according to an announcement from the organization. The terms of the transfer were not disclosed but reports have said the fee is around $600,000.

Salquist, 29, joined the Fire in January 2023 from Danish Superliga side Silkeborg IF after Chicago had been pursuing the center back for multiple transfer windows. His Fire debut was delayed as he was recovering from an injury he suffered in Denmark with Silkeborg but he ended up making 14 MLS appearances for Chicago and started each of their matches in the second edition of Leagues Cup.

Injuries continued to pop up for Salquist during his lone season in Chicago and he told On Tap Sports Net in September that injuries prevented him from finding a rhythm with the Fire in 2024.

The move opens up an international roster slot and a senior roster spot for the Fire, who have already invested at center back this offseason with the addition of Jack Elliott.

Chicago still needs at least one more starting-caliber center back and some depth at the position before they begin the 2025 Major League Soccer season.
