Chido Obi has been one of the best players at youth level this season, scoring 15 goals in 28 appearances across various academy competitions include Premier League 2 and the FA Youth Cup as he continues his progression.

It has now come to light that United’s hierarchy made a decision in January.

Despite interest from clubs enquiring about a potential loan move for the teenage striker, the club rejected all approaches, choosing the keep the 18-year-old within their development structure rather than send him out mid-season, as reported by BBC Sport.

His goal tally emphasises the talent that attracted interest, yet United opted against sending him out.

United’s academy has a deep history of nurturing talent, and Chido Obi’s journey, from rising through the ranks at Arsenal to making the switch to United in 2024, has been one of the most compelling narratives.

He became the club’s third-youngest Premier League starter in May 2025 when he lined up against Brentford at just 17 years and 156 days, breaking the previous record held by Mason Greenwood.

Despite his promise, the transition to senior football has not been entirely smooth.

After making first-team appearances last season under Ruben Amorim, Chido Obi spent much of this campaign back with the youth sides.

The Danish forward would’ve been happy to see the back of Ruben Amorim as it was reported that he was unhappy with him following his harsh comments.

In February, Chido Obi showcased his finishing instinct with a four goal haul in a 4-1 Premier League 2 victory over Leicester City.

With the busy summer window approaching, the loan discussion is likely to resurface, and a temporary move to the Championship or League One side could be beneficial for Chido Obi’s next phase of growth.

United’s approach is one of retaining their talent until the time to let them go is right.

United are prioritising Chido Obi’s long-term development over immediate loan move, keeping one of their brightest young forwards close to home.
