Italy international Federico Chiesa shared a social media message following the tragic death of his teammate Diogo Jota: ‘I still can’t believe what happened.’

Italian winger Chiesa was among the many Liverpool players paying tribute to the Reds’ striker Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain on July 3.

“Diogo, it’s hard to find the right words at a time like this. I still can’t believe what happened,” Chiesa wrote on Instagram, sharing a picture alongside the Portuguese winger.

“I love you and I will miss you deeply. My thoughts are with you and your brother André; may you both rest in peace.

“To your family, your wife and your children, I send my deepest and most heartfelt condolences.”

Diogo Jota, 28, died with his brother André in a car accident in Spain. The Liverpool winger got married just a few days earlier and had three children.

Many Serie A clubs, including Juventus, Milan and Atalanta, sent their condolences to Jota’s family and Liverpool.

Diogo Jota joined the Reds in a €44m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers  in 2020.

He played alongside another Italian striker, Patrick Cutrone, at Wolves. The Como forward wrote in an Instagram story on Thursday: “No words, rest in peace Diogo.”

Jota scored 65 goals and provided 26 assists in 182 appearances with Liverpool, winning the Premier League title in the 2024-25 campaign.
