Reports in Italy claim that Cristian Chivu held an emergency meeting with Inter players before their return from the USA after a dispute between captain Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu.
Inter coach Chivu met with players and executives at the team hotel in Charlotte on Tuesday, following a public dispute between Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez.
According to Gazzetta, the meeting was requested by the Nerazzurri boss, who wanted to reiterate that the team must remain united and move in the same direction when preparations for the new season begin in a few weeks.
According to the report, the leading figures in the Nerazzurri dressing room shared their thoughts on the challenging moment they are experiencing, and the group appreciated Chivu’s decision to discuss the matter.
Calhanoglu was not present at the meeting as he had returned to Europe alongside other injured players just a few hours before their 2-0 loss against Fluminense in the Club World Cup Round of 16.
Tension in the Nerazzurri dressing room was further highlighted by Marcus Thuram’s like of Calhanoglu’s Instagram post on Monday, in which the Turkish midfielder hit back at Lautaro Martinez, saying that the captain’s words “hit hard” but were divisive.
