Nicky Butt says Manchester United failed Harry Maguire by never giving him a proper defensive partner

Manchester United have always built their success on the strength of their partnerships. From Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, every era found their best defensive partner. That balance has, however, disappeared over time. Nicky Butt believes that this imbalance has cost Harry Maguire more than anyone else.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, the former United midfielder said that the club has failed to complement him better. He pointed out that Maguire plays his best football for the England national team, where John Stones complements him perfectly. At Old Trafford, he has never found that chemistry. Maguire joined a side that keeps changing their backline and coaching staff. Managers replaced one another, and his partners shifted constantly.

Butt’s words reveal a painful truth about recruitment. United spent heavily but rarely built a clear plan that matched Maguire’s strengths. Under Ruben Amorim, Maguire has displayed consistency yet again. He even scored the winning goal against Liverpool recently, but his resurgence still carries uncertainty. The 32-year-old has entered the final year of his contract without knowing his future.

Reports say he wants to stay and would even accept a pay cut, but the club has yet to offer him an official deal. In January 2026, the 32-year-old can start talking to clubs outside England, and hence, United will need to make a decision soon. Meanwhile, we reported earlier that United are looking at David Affengruber as well, who has caught the attention of top clubs across Europe. United are noa after the Elche defender as part of their rebuilding phase. We also reported that United are monitoring the development of Zeno Debast. That shows the club is looking to bring in defenders who will suit Amorim’s long-term vision.

“Do you know what you were saying about never letting the club down, I think it’s the other way around, I think the club has let him down, if I’m honest.”

“If you look at his best games they have always been for England, he’s had John Stones next to him, it’s like a Yin and Yang.”

“If you look at all the best partnerships for Man United, Bruce – Pallister, totally different players, Vidic – Ferdinand, totally different players.”

“With Harry, he’s going to that club and he’s never had a player next to him who can compliment him ever.”

The Missing Partner and the Shifting Backline

Butt’s opinion arrives when United’s defence still struggles for the perfect combination in the back three despite progress. Maguire has recently performed better because Amorim has given him the backing. Yet, the Englishman still lacks a consistent partner. The backline sometimes loses its effectiveness because the defensive midfield screen remains weak.

Lisandro Martinez’s return will fix part of the problem. His aggression and ability on the ball will add a lot to the United defence. Even so, United must plan better for the future. They can sell non-essential players and create space to sign younger defenders or free agents who fit the system.

However, Maguire should earn credit for facing years of criticism without breaking. He rebuilt his form through persistence and belief. Whether United extend his stay or let him go, Butt’s words remind the club that great defenders grow through strong partnerships, not isolation. If United finally find the right balance for Maguire, or his successor, they can restore the defensive calm they have missed for years. It’s now time for the club to act.
