Antonio Conte’s limited managerial influence led to his struggles at Tottenham Hotspur.

Conte could soon make his managerial return with Napoli. The Italian club could appoint him as their new boss for the next season. He has been without a job since parting ways with Tottenham in March 2023 and Fabio Viviani has opined on what went wrong for Conte at Spurs.

The Italian manager feels the 54-year-old didn’t have the kind of influence at the North London club that he had in his previous roles. And, his team’s inability to compete with the best frustrated him.

During an interview via Area Napoli, Viviani said: “There is little to say about Conte. I believe, however, that the Lecce man wants to have more influence from a managerial point of view. He always tries to build a foundation for success. That’s what I think he suffered most from at Tottenham, not being able to compete with rivals.”

While Conte did have the support the Fabio Paratici during his time in London and the duo did come together to make a few important signings, the 54-year-old didn’t have the kind of influence and freedom that he had at his previous jobs.

Antonio Conte Tottenham spell did not go according to plan

He had an impressive track record when he took charge of the North London club in February 2021. He always wanted to have a big say on transfers in order to build a strong base but things were not always in his control at Spurs, something that he didn’t really like.

During his time at the club, he led them in 76 matches and helped them win 41 of those. While they had only lost 23 times and it was still considered a decent return, Conte was no longer on good terms with the club. He blasted his players as well as the club in a post-match press conference and post that, he left the club in March 2023.
