Como eye Manchester United star ahead of the 2026 January transfer window

Manchester United have continued to struggle despite making summer signings. The players are confused about their roles, and many of them aren’t getting adequate game time in the team. We reported earlier that Manchester United could land a prolific Bundesliga attacker for £56million in January, but we should now turn our attention to one of United’s forwards. Italian outlet Corriere Como reports that Serie A side Como want to sign Joshua Zirkzee. Ruben Amorim has barely given him game time this season.

Zirkzee has started just one game in the ongoing Premier League season so far. So, there have been speculations about his future as he continues to receive less game time on the field. Cesc Fabregas is currently managing Como, and he wants to build a team that can compete presently and also in the future. The manager and the club feel that the Manchester United attacker will help them in their pursuit of the ambition.

The Dutchman already has experience of the Serie A during his tenure with Bologna, and hence it would not be a gamble for him if he moves to the Italian league mid-season. The report revealed that Como have a concrete interest, but the Red Devils have not yet informed their valuation for the 24-year-old. However, it will be a big deal for Como if they manage to complete it in January 2026.

Why a move could suit Zirkzee?

Joshua Zirkzee arrived at Manchester United in July 2024 from Bologna for £36.5 million, but his debut season did not bring consistent numbers. He scored a debut goal and ended with seven strikes in 49 appearances across competitions, yet long spells without scoring raised doubts over his long-term impact. He has faced tougher issues in the ongoing 2025/26 season, with just three substitute appearances in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup. The 24-year-old has improved his passing, but the lack of goals and minutes continues to show his struggles.

Zirkzee’s best role may not be as a striker but as a number 10, where his creativity and link-up play can flourish. Como’s 4-3-3 formation under Fabregas emphasises build-up play, midfield overloads, and control through the centre. It makes Zirkzee’s technical qualities a possible asset. He could thrive in a deeper position, supplying runners and joining attacks late.

However, he could face a challenge adapting to their counter-pressing style. Manchester United, however, rejected offers for him in the summer and say they are unwilling to sanction a sale. We reported earlier that Ruben Amorim is still keen to strengthen one Manchester United spot despite summer investment, and hence, nothing is certain as of now at Old Trafford. Yet the prospect of regular minutes in Italy, within a system that could better suit his talents, makes the Como link one to watch closely as January approaches.
