Coronavirus ends French Ligue 1, Ligue 2 seasons

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe ended the 2019-20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons on Tuesday.

As noted by Sky Sports, Philippe announced a ban on all sporting events in the country until at least September due to the coronavirus pandemic. Other restrictions throughout France will slowly begin to ease in May.

"The 2019-2020 season of professional sports, including football, will not be able to resume," Philippe said.

Last week, the Dutch Eredivisie voided the 2019-20 season due to the virus outbreak, a decision that cost Ajax the league title.

ESPN's Julien Laurens and Jonathan Johnson explained that both Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon remain alive in this season's Champions League competition that remains indefinitely suspended due to the coronavirus. It's not yet known what will happen with French clubs if future UCL fixtures are rescheduled in the spring or summer.

French giants PSG haven't been informed if they will be crowned champions of a shortened season or if The Professional Football League and French Football Federation will push to void the campaign. The issue of promotion and relegation must also be addressed.

As things stand, Toulouse are bottom of the table and would have certainly been relegated had the season completed as hoped. Amiens will also be dropped if the campaign is deemed finished rather than voided.

On Monday, a German virologist warned against the Bundesliga resuming play in early May due to concerns about the safety of footballers and other personnel amid the pandemic. Meanwhile, Premier League clubs plan to hold a meeting on Friday regarding the completion of that season, as Dan Roan and Laura Scott of BBC Sport and other outlets reported on Monday.

Several top-flight English sides commenced training sessions, albeit under strict guidelines, this week.
