Could Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan be banned from UEFA Champions League?

Earlier in the week, reports surfaced that UEFA could look to remove several teams from the Champions League and Europa League competitions for their involvement in the breakaway European Super League that was announced last Sunday. The situation changed, however, when Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all publicly pulled out of the project.

As the Associated Press (h/t ESPN) notes, however, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and AC Milan are still associated with the Super League, and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin threatened on Friday the governing body could ban those clubs from competitions if they don't abandon the rebel league.

"It's crystal clear that the clubs will have to decide if they are Super League or they are a European club," Ceferin told the AP. "If they say we are a Super League, then they don't play Champions League, of course ... and if they are ready to do that, they can play in their own competition."

Ceferin added:

"We still are waiting for legal expertise and then we will say, but everybody faces consequences for their decisions and they know that. For me, it's a very different situation between the clubs that admitted their mistake and said, 'We will leave the project.' The others mainly know I would say that this project is dead, but they don't want to believe it, probably."

Any punishment handed to Super League clubs will likely be met with legal actions and vitriol, particularly among teams that left the project roughly 48 hours after it was announced. It's believed the Premier League will look to adopt a rule that would expel any club that attempts to join an unsanctioned competition in the future.
