Cremonese head coach David Nicola believes that Jamie Vardy is ‘a player who has shown great quality’, but refused to provide any updates on a potential deal for the former England international as his focus remains on Friday’s test against Sassuolo.

Reports on Thursday suggest that newly-promoted Cremonese are closing in on a deal to sign Leicester City legend Vardy, who is available as a free agent after the expiry of his contract with the Foxes earlier this summer.

The club are reportedly sorting the final deals of an agreement with the 38-year-old, one of the protagonists of Leicester’s odds-defying rise to the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri in 2016, and that he could soon travel over to Italy to finalise his move.

What Nicola said about potential Vardy signing

“I don’t care, I’m only thinking about Sassuolo,” Cremonese head coach Nicola said when asked about the Premier League cult hero during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

He added: “If we talk about it once the dust settles, I would say that we’re talking about a player who has shown great quality, but I’m interested in Cremonese, who have a big challenge against Sassuolo.”

Vardy is currently 14th on the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers with 145 top-flight goals from 342 appearances. He has spent the past 13 seasons with Leicester, and netted a total of 200 goals from 500 appearances across all competitions.
