Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning goal for Al Nassr against Al-Hilal on Friday but it did not count.

The 38-year-old smashed a brilliant left-footed volley high into the roof of the net following a cross from Sadio Mane in the 73rd minute.

Ronaldo began his celebration routine but it was then halted by an offside flag.

The call was then checked by the VAR, who confirmed that Ronaldo had been offside.

Not everyone agreed though.

Al Nassr manager Luis Castro was seen showing the fourth official an image on his phone that he believed was evidence that Ronaldo had been onside.

Indeed, the official images provided to the broadcasters showed that Ronaldo had been behind the defender when Mane crossed the ball.

However, it was the defender's arm that was in front of Ronaldo.

Once the arm had been removed from the equation, Ronaldo's knee was marginally ahead of the defender's shoulder.

Had the goal been given, it would have tied the game at 1-1 following a 64th-minute opener by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

But Al-Hilal went on to win 3-0 after two late strikes from Aleksandar Mitrovic.
