Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United with immediate effect after explosive interview

Cristiano Ronaldo received his desired divorce from Manchester United ahead of playing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. 

"Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect," the Premier League side explained in a statement released Tuesday afternoon local time. "The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under (manager) Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch." 

United's announcement came less than two full weeks after it was first learned that Ronaldo blasted Ten Hag and the direction of the club via an explosive interview with media personality Piers Morgan that was released after the Premier League and other top-flight competitions paused for the World Cup held in Qatar. 

On Monday, Ronaldo defended the timing of the interview and defiantly noted that "I talk when I want to." CR7 and Portugal open their World Cup campaign against Ghana on Thursday.

It was widely reported throughout the summer that Ronaldo wished to leave Old Trafford to play for a club participating in this season's UEFA Champions League competition, but he couldn't secure a move before the summer transfer window closed. After Ronaldo's interview with Morgan, United confirmed they had "initiated appropriate steps in response." It was subsequently reported the club wished to terminate his deal and could consider suing the 37-year-old for breach of contract.
