The international future of Cristiano Ronaldo has been thrown into fresh doubt after new claims suggested he could retire from Portugal following one final appearance for the country.

The former Manchester United star confirmed after Portugal’s heart-breaking 2026 FIFA World Cup exit that it had been his final World Cup.

However, it was later made clear that he had not yet decided to retire from international football and intended to take time before making any final decision.

That appeared to leave the door open to UEFA Euro 2028.

Now, though, a fresh report has suggested the end of one of football’s greatest international careers could arrive much sooner.

The 41-year-old enjoyed two unforgettable spells at United.

He won three Premier League titles with the club, as well as the Champions League and his first Ballon d’Or before returning to Old Trafford in 2021.

Many supporters have often dreamed of seeing Ronaldo say goodbye on the same stage where he became a global superstar.

Cristiano Ronaldo tipped to bid farewell at former club’s stadium

According to journalist Mohamed Awaad on X, a Portuguese football business agent believes Ronaldo is planning to retire from international football after Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Wales.

The report claims the match will take place at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, the home of Sporting CP.

It was at that stadium where Ronaldo first announced himself to the football world in 2003.

He produced a stunning performance against Manchester United before Sir Alex Ferguson moved quickly to sign him for Old Trafford.

The suggestion is that the stadium would provide the perfect setting for Ronaldo to bid farewell to Portugal, bringing his remarkable international career full circle.

There has been no official confirmation from Ronaldo or the Portuguese Football Federation regarding those claims.

For now, they remain speculation.

After Portugal’s 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo insisted only that it had been his final World Cup and said he would discuss the rest of his international future with his family before making a final decision.
