Manchester United have already strengthened the midfield with the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but work is far from finished.
United are also exploring ways to add greater competition in the attacking department, with several wide players being monitored over recent weeks.
Competition for those targets has intensified, however, with clubs across both England and Europe positioning themselves for potential deals.
One of those names now appears to be edging closer to a move elsewhere.
Roma are making significant progress in their pursuit of West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville after the Dutch attacker gave the Serie A side the green light to continue negotiations.
According to Matteo Moretto via YouTube, the Italian club are close to reaching an agreement with the player over personal terms and are aiming to complete the transfer as early as next week.
The report adds that Roma’s next step will be submitting an official bid to West Ham, with previous reports from Sky Sports Italia suggesting the Giallorossi were preparing an offer worth £38 million.
Manchester United remain firmly in the picture, though, with the Premier League giants still understood to be among the strongest admirers of the former Leeds United winger.
Tottenham Hotspur are also continuing to monitor the situation, while Aston Villa remain interested as they weigh up attacking additions of their own.
Liverpool have also previously been credited with interest and were even linked with attempting to hijack any potential move for the Dutchman.
Crysencio Summerville has emerged as one of the most in-demand attackers on the market, meaning United face increasing competition if they decide to step up their pursuit before Roma manage to finalise an agreement with West Ham.
