The pressure on Thomas Frank has been rising, and it looks like Tottenham Hotspur have a familiar decision looming. But for this once, it looks like the consequences of that are being spelt out to them in advance.
Club skipper Cristian Romero is reportedly prepared to hand in a transfer request in the upcoming summer transfer window if current head coach Thomas Frank is not backed by the stakeholders and shown the door.
The Argentine World Cup winner is one of the few elite players in the current roster at N17. And we have seen how players with his capabilities usually look beyond because of money or trophies, but this time, the warning is about something far more important (in the Lilywhites’ perspective); it is about direction.
According to a recent report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Argentine centre-back ‘wants to leave’ Tottenham. And he will submit a transfer request to the club when the summer transfer window opens, if the club does not guarantee the continued presence of the Dane head coach at the helm.
While it may sound like a threat to many, it actually is not a threat, but it is more of a verdict that is waiting to happen if the Lilywhites take up the sacking decision.
We saw how the former Atalanta ace put through his frustrations after the North Londoners’ recent defeat to Bournemouth. He went on to publicly question the hierarchy at Hotspur Way for only “showing up when things are going well” and then staying silent when a real sense of accountability is needed. Now, when you look between the lines, that is surely not the words of someone who is upset about the current form. To me, this translates to a leader who no longer trusts the structure above him.
So it looks like the decision-makers in the corridors at Hotspur Way choose to repeat their old habits and sack another manager, then their best defender will follow him out the door.
Romero is not someone who is merely a squad player. He is an integral presence in the dressing room at N17. But beyond that, he is 27 and still in his prime. He has won a World Cup with Argentina and a Europa League with Tottenham. He is (in a sense) the emotional core of the team.
And we have seen time and again how players like this do not beg to stay; they usually leave quietly when the project stops making sense.
The highlight from the Fichajes report was not that Romero wants out. But it was the why. And that is where the ball is in stakeholders’ court now…
